It’s an “Olivetti Lettera 32” with the serial no. 2254603. By means of the website “typewriterdatabase.com” I could identify its manufacturing date as the year 1964. That is 10 years before I was born. It’s a simple and relatively light travel typewriter. Weighing only 4.2 kg it could probably be even called an ultra lightweight travel typewriter. An Olympia SM3 weighs 6.3 kg in comparison. This specific model became famous when Cormac McCarthy announced that he had written about 5 Mio. words on a single typewriter of this brand. Upon this message some people expressed their astonishment, saying it was an amazing fact that such a “flimsy” machine could last that long. Well, I’d say it’s not flimsy at all, rather smallish but at the same time sturdy. And it types very well. Why did I buy a typewriter? I hope it helps me to improve my creative writing process! Obviously, a typewriter doesn’t have an internet connection and therefore offers no distraction whatsoever! Also, I like the typing sounds it makes. It’s really relaxing and meditative to write on this mechanical machine. And one thing for sure: Whenever I will hit the road one day, I will take this baby with me!
